Mandibular contour surgery: customized prosthetics.

One of the distinctive features that characterizes facial harmony is given by the jawline : this area guarantees more pronounced masculine characteristics in men and greater attractiveness in women's faces.

There are substantial differences between the two sexes since in men the ideal jaw is square while in women it is thinner and rounded.

Today it is possible to modify the contour line of the jaw with minimally invasive maxillofacial surgery and with the use of 3D surgery techniques.

In mandibular contouring surgery for women, a line is sought that helps improve the attractiveness of the face in order to obtain a triangular shape. In men , however, the goal is generally to increase the size and definition of the angles, often also combining a change in the shape of the chin to make it more square.

To change the shape of the jawline, customized prostheses are now used that are inserted into the patient's jaw.

Generally, surgical access is made through the mouth, thus leaving no visible scars.

The prostheses are designed in a virtual environment on the patient's CT scan so that they can fit perfectly as far as possible.

It concerns the internal portion of the patient's bone and so that the desired shape can be obtained on the external surface.

The material from which the prostheses are made is PEEK , a thermoplastic and biocompatible polymer with high wear resistance.
